Meet Dr. Gina Scarzella

Gina embarked on her veterinary journey in 2011 after graduating from St. Matthew’s University on Grand Cayman. Currently, she works as an emergency Veterinarian at Animal Emergency and Trauma Hospital in Wilmington. Her passion for helping animals ignited at a young age, setting her on the path to becoming a veterinarian.

Initially focusing on equine medicine, Gina's love for horses persisted, but she discovered that the quality of life equine medicine provided didn't align with her aspirations. Recognizing the need for work-life balance and avenues to manage stress in private practice, she transitioned to small animal private practice. Over eight years at Carolina Beach and College Road Animal Hospitals, she honed her skills and cherished the relationships with her clients. It was during this time that Gina recognized the need for at-home euthanasia services, enabling clients to bid farewell to their beloved pets in a manner of their choosing – perhaps on their parent’s bed or surrounded by family in the comfort of their living room.

At College Road Animal Hospital, Gina met Ashton, a friend who sparked her interest in veterinary social work. Together, they brainstormed ways to provide veterinary practices access to a social worker, leading Gina to obtain a Veterinary Human Support Certificate from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. This certification expanded her knowledge of veterinary social work and equipped her with invaluable tools to excel in veterinary medicine. Gina played a pivotal role in bringing a full-time veterinary social worker to Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral and co-teaches a veterinary social work elective at UNCW.

Beyond her clinical work, Gina co-founded A Pawsitive Mission, a program of Paws-ability, a nonprofit that offers funding for emergent veterinary medical care to pet parents in New Hanover County.

In-home euthanasia holds a special place in her heart, as she understands the significance of offering pets peace in their last moments. Following the passing of Dr. Doffermyre, "Dr. D," Gina has taken on the responsibility of providing the same level of compassion to pet parents during their most vulnerable moments. Gina is eager to assist pet parents in helping their beloved companions cross the rainbow bridge and provide them with support.

When not saving pets and supporting their families, Gina and her husband, David, enjoy traveling, anything to do with the outdoors, gardening, and caring for their numerous rescued pets.
